Program Notes

Wildlife for oboe, piano, and percussion was commission by the CUBE Contemporary Music Ensemble in 2005. Its form was suggested by the ensemble's name and is based on a scheme that involves tracing a path on the edges of a hypercube (a 4-D Cube). The nature of the music is not cerebral or abstract however, but energetic and passionate--even hyper--involving timbral interplay among the three instruments and including some extended techniques in the oboe part. The work is in sixteen large not-so-distinct sections, the ninth of which, in the middle of the piece, is sparse and dominated by un-pitched percussion sounds.
