Program Notes

Out and Out, written for Marianne Gythfeldt in the spring of 1989, is concerned with the interplay between the two instruments; the clarinetist and pianist interact to shape the musical continuity, often doubling each others' notes and rhythms. The resulting tracing of one musical line by another affects every aspect of the piece, producing exceedingly great reaches of reference, pulling together music from every part of the piece. The effect might be compared to holography wherein each part of a photographic plate contains the entire picture. "Out and out" also refers to various processes of musical extensionÄones that prolong certain key harmonies over long stretches of music or call for huge leaps, such as in the last measure where the clarinetist must alternate his/her lowest and highest notes in quick succession.
