Program Notes

Aubade was composed in 1981 and revised in 1990 as a piece of fixed-media computer music. It was realized in what then called the ESM Computer Music Studio. Unfortunately, the recording of the work has since been lost. All that remains is the pencil score and hard copy of the voluminous computer files that were used to generate the piece. Typing all these program instructions into computer files and then modify them further for input into newer computer music programs was outweighed by my decision to recompose the piece for chamber orchestra.

The result is a colorful composition that in its orchestration composes out the one-to-eight-part web of contrapuntal strands that were the musical substance of the computer version.
