Birthday Allegro was written at the instigation of Bradley Lubman, who wanted to celebrate the sixtieth birthday of my colleague David Liptak on a concert that featured his music. It joined a number of other short pieces written for the same ensemble and was a complete surprize to David the night of the concert.
