Program Notes

The basic idea for Three Rhythmic Studies occurred to me least 30 years ago, but I didn’t get around to using it until last spring. It involves a transfer of pitch structure to rhythmic structure so that the combinational properties of certain collections of notes can be exactly matched by the properties of certain collections of beats in a twelve-beat meter. The three studies are rough rhythmic canons graduated in complexity. The exact instrumentation is freely determined for each performance and each study can be played by 1 to 4 percussion players.

The three studies are onamonapiacally named: Tattoo; That Tutu; That Tutu, too.
